St Vincent’s rallies to support bushfire victims

08 January 2020

Like so many others across the country and the world, the people of St Vincent’s Care Services and St Vincent’s Health Australia are heartbroken and distressed by the horrific bushfires currently devastating much of southern Australia. We have also been inspired and heartened by the many stories of overwhelming support and solidarity, as communities band together to assist those affected.

St Vincent’s Health Australia is joining this groundswell of support, with the organisation donating $250,000 to the Vinnies Bushfire Appeal, operated by the St Vincent de Paul Society.

In addition, St Vincent’s Health Australia has established a website for further donations to the appeal by the St Vincent’s community. We would love to see the amount raised by our staff, volunteers and their families and friends reach $250,000 over the coming weeks, for a total contribution of $500,000 for the Vinnies appeal.

You can donate by visiting: https://donate.vinnies.org.au/appeals-nsw/st-vincents-health-bushfire-appeal

Donations over $2 are tax deductible.

Vinnies is providing emergency food, clothing, financial assistance and other essentials for those who have evacuated or lost their homes, and is also working collaboratively with government agencies to assist displaced families and individuals with their immediate needs.

In addition to immediate assistance, donations to the Vinnies Bushfire Appeal will be allocated to community recovery projects in the aftermath of the disaster, to help the worst-struck communities to get back on their feet.

The St Vincent’s community has already heeded the call for assistance through other means, including:

  • hospital staff organising collections of expired but usable medical supplies to donate to wildlife rescue centres
  • aged care and retirement living staff and residents hand-making garments, pouches and blankets for injured animals
  • dozens of staff directly involved in fighting the blazes in voluntary positions.

St Vincent’s Health Australia is providing support to staff who are directly impacted by the fires, including those volunteering on the frontline, and those who have suffered loss due to the fires. St Vincent’s hospitals in Sydney are on standby to provide medical care to those displaced by the fires, and are ready to assist in any way they can.

This is a confronting and heartbreaking time for Australia, but when Australians are faced with adversity, our true humanity and compassion shines through. The people of St Vincent’s stand in solidarity with everyone affected by this disaster, and we encourage those in our community to donate to this appeal. Together we can achieve so much, it is part of our St Vincent’s way.
