Your role in aged care can make a difference

Greater representation of Indigenous people in the health workforce means better outcomes for everyone.

At St Vincent's, we want you to join us in improving the health and wellbeing of the elderly - especially Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elders and residents.

The truth is, your role in aged care is a lot more important than you might think.

It's more than a job.

If you're interested in a role at St Vincent's, get in touch with our Indigenous Careers team directly at indigenouscareers@svha.org.au.

Why Indigenous representation matters in aged care

International studies have shown that carers from the same culture as the people they are caring for, actually helps them live longer.

And with a growing number of Indigenous aged care residents not having family nearby to care for them, that need grows larger every day.

Your role in our team can help residents (and especially Indigenous residents) stay healthy in mind, body and spirit and could contribute to longer and better lives.

That's why it matters. You matter.

"St Vincent’s commitment to reconciliation is demonstrated by the appointment of my role as Indigenous recruitment coordinator and from this platform I am able to influence all aspects of recruitment to make a lasting difference for our Mob. I am deeply honoured and privileged to call this my job. "

Wayne Delamont - Indigenous Recruitment Coordinator, St Vincent's Care

Monique Hooper – Quality, Governance and Risk

Having worked 20 years in healthcare, Monique is a perfect example of what career progression can look like for someone working in aged care.

Starting as a health care worker, Monique then became an Assistant in Nursing, an Enrolled Nurse, a Registered Nurse, a Clinical Nurse, Nurse Practitioner and now works in Clinical Governance for the St Vincent's team. She's now dropped down to part time to study her PHD on palliative care in prisons!

“Working in many health facilities in Southeast Queensland over the past two decades, I can hands down say that St Vincents is very welcoming and it’s a good place to work.”

"By welcoming First Nations employees into our workforce, we not only honor their rich cultural heritage and promote diversity and inclusivity, but we also gain a deeper understanding of their unique perspectives and experiences. This enables us to better serve and care for our Indigenous residents and clients, and to create a workplace culture that values and respects all individuals."

Lincoln Hopper - CEO, St Vincent's Care

Jessica Pollard – Food Service Assistant

Jessica has been working as a Food Services Assistant at St Vincent's for the last nine months after leaving her job working in a cafe.

As a Food Services Assistant, Jessica's main role is making sure every resident receives nourishing meals. To do this she memorises all of the residents' dietary requirements and makes sure every resident has a tea or coffee in hand. She's also a great friend to residents, taking the time to chat with them when she can.

"I like to just sit down and talk with the residents. Sometimes some of them are lonely and they have no one. So, you just be there for them."

"Seeing First Nations People represented amongst our staff just continues that tradition of care of the Sisters of Charity for the elderly and is an absolute recognition of the continued tradition of care in Indigenous culture as well. I think it's really important that we see that representation in the faces of our workforce."

Kirk Farquharson - Facility Manager, St Vincent's Care Kangaroo Point

Shanita Pollard – Assistant in Nursing, Admin

Shanita works as an Assistant in Nursing (AIN) at St Vincent's. Recently however, she's started taking on an admin role as well helping out at reception and welcoming people into the facility.

There's no doubt that working with people as an Assistant an Nursing can be an incredibly rewarding at times but also challenging. Shanita has loved being able to see the facility in a different role and in a different light.

Shanita's best advice: make sure you have good managers.

"Our Facility Manager is very good. If any time you want to speak with him, he will open up space for you."

If you want to work in healthcare then I think this is a good place to start."

The spirit of accompaniment is captured in the way we care of the needs of Elders.  In this way we step in to spaces when invited or needed.  We engage and adjust behaviours where possible to ensure our elders are comfortable and happy.  We listen carefully to what is said and what is unspoken.

This gift and your presence would, I’m sure be of benefit to wider communities of elders and residents in Aged Care Services."
